England have been preparing for a game against France and the cancellation, which was confirmed last night, means a two-week hiatus between matches. If the Japan-Scotland game, which was scheduled for Sunday, is cancelled it is another matter altogether. With the cancellation of that match, Scotland would be out of the tournament and that would discredit the entire event. However both teams are already qualified, so the cancellation does not materially affect the tournament’s outcome. Cancelling Japan-Scotland, however, would eradicate from the World Cup the most eagerly awaited pool game of Japan 2019.
