Canadian streaming service Shomi shutting down

It began as the video-streaming stepchild of Rogers and Shaw when it launched just under two years ago, but Shomi, a Canadian-made streaming video service, announced that it will be shutting down on Nov. 30. “We’re really grateful to Canadians who enthusiastically invited us into their living rooms and took us with them on their phones, tablets and laptops,” said David Asch, senior vice-president and general manager, Shomi, said in a release. Created as a homegrown competitor to Netflix, Shomi was first only available to its telco owners customers, before it launched to all Canadians at a price of $8.99 a month. It also competed with Bell Media’s Crave TV, which is still in operation.
