Despite their experience, U.S. President Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi are guilty of forgetting this basic axiom. Over many months, Biden and Pelosi made literally hundreds of calls, held dozens of caucuses and town halls, and begged, pleaded and threatened their very divided and unruly party. Biden and Pelosi had no such enviable docility, with a caucus split into half a dozen mutually distrustful factions. There are several lessons in this for Canadian politicians: relearning the craft of multi-partisan coalitions to push through transformative legislation is possible. We could do worse than examine the achievements of Joseph Biden and Nancy Pelosi for some guidance on how to get better again at what used to be a national virtue: compromise.
