PYEONGCHANG — Willie Desjardins is like most Canadian hockey lovers. “Many of them didn’t necessarily think they would get this opportunity.”As chief architect for the Canadian team, Burke worked at a disadvantage from the start. Those that made the final cut were selected based on their experience but also for semblance of the great Canadian hockey trait – grit. Russia’s KHL yielded the most Canadian players (13) but there were four from Switzerland, three each from the AHL and Sweden and one from both Germany and Switzerland. While hardly a cast of misfits, the Canadian team is loaded with players thrilled at the one-off chance of a lifetime.
