Onstad debuted in 1987 with the Vancouver 86ers, one of seven Canadian teams he played for over a span of 16 years. But it wasn’t until age 35 — when he was also a member of the Canadian national team — that he got his first chance in Major League Soccer with the San Jose Earthquakes. He retired from international duty as the most capped goalkeeper in the national team’s history with 58 appearances over 22 years, and was inducted into Canada’s soccer hall in 2015. For all his national pride, Onstad will be doing what he can to knock off the only Canadian team still standing in the MLS playoffs in the two-leg conference final. “I think when that starts happening on a regular basis, you’ll see the Canadian men’s national team start to flourish, too,” he said.
