Canadian Olympic goalie Shannon Szabados seeks next step: ECHL tryout

Canadian Olympic team goalie Shannon Szabados, who has been the cage custodian the last two years for the Columbus Cottonmouths in the Southern Professional Hockey League, is at a career fork in the road. Obviously, the ECHL is a step up because National Hockey League teams routinely send their third- and fourth-best prospect signed pros there, but Szabados, who just turned 30, has always been about challenges. Her pro hockey is another chapter. She had a one-game look in Tri-City in the Western Hockey League and spent time in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and in college at Grand MacEwan and at NAIT. And she was an instant hit, becoming the first woman to get a shutout in a men’s pro league, 3-0 against the Huntsville Havoc.
