OTTAWA — While all eyes are on NAFTA, Canada is trying to move quickly on trade in the Asia-Pacific, with decisions on a China free trade agreement and an updated TPP coming this fall. He noted the president of Mexico also recently expressed interest in a trade deal with China. “I would be astounded if they held back.”If Canada launched trade negotiations with China it would be the first G7 country to do so. “It will be a tough negotiation,” said Calvert, who was also deputy chief negotiator for Canada during China’s accession to the World Trade Organization. And they’re prepared to take a long time to conclude agreements.”A trade deal with China is not the only iron in the fire.
