Canada loses first Olympic game since 2010: Czechs win in shootout

GANGNEUNG — Meet Team Canada 2018, where hard work may be the best compensation for a lineup not that deep with proven talent. The defeat also snapped an 11-game Olympic winning streak for Canada dating back to a 2010 defeat to the U.S. in Vancouver. The game ended when Maxim Noreau’s shootout attempt slipped off the post behind Czech goalie Pavel Francouz allowing the Czechs to win 2-1 in the penalty shot portion of the program. It was the second for the Czechs in just eight shots on Ben Scrivens, who got a second consecutive start in net for Canada. Though the game was entertaining throughout, it wasn’t exactly a smoothly played game by either team with extended periods of puck possession at a minimum.
