OTTAWA—Canada is expelling a Chinese diplomat accused of gathering intelligence on a Conservative MP’s family, in a move likely to exacerbate tensions between the two countries. “I have been clear: we will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs. The statement called the claim of Chinese interference in Canada a “lie” propagated by a “certain politician and media,” and accused Canada of breaking unspecified international laws. “There are members of the Chinese Canadian community who have been warning about interference, been warning about intimidation for decades. All of this occurs with the clock ticking down on a deadline for David Johnston, the special rapporteur on foreign interference, to submit interim recommendations on how the government should best handle the overall issue.
