OTTAWA — Canada may be approaching the peak of the current wave of new COVID-19 cases, federal public health officials said Friday as they presented stark modelling suggesting case counts are headed toward unprecedented heights. An estimated 170,000 COVID-19 cases a day are expected in Canada, the data suggests, and that’s with the current health restrictions in place, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam told a news conference. Without those restrictions, the numbers could rise to as high as 300,000 new cases a day, she said. That’s more than triple the peak number of cases during last spring’s wave, when the highest number of new cases in a day hit 9,564. “Certainly after the Omicron wave, we’ll be able to see what the next steps are for vaccination and other public health measures,” he said in French.
