PhotoPrime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada promised to make climate change a priority when he campaigned for office last year. This marks a big turning point for his country, whose previous government resisted aggressive steps on climate change because it wanted to protect the oil industry. British Columbia started taxing emissions in 2008 and now has a carbon tax of 30 Canadian dollars per ton. That is why even Alberta, home to Canada’s enormous oil sands deposits, has agreed to tax carbon emissions. Even so, Canada’s move is important and should embolden other leaders to take similar steps.
