Canada's Damian Warner dominated the speed events in the decathlon, winning the 100 metres and the 110 hurdles. ( Lee Jin-man / The Associated Press )RIO DE JANEIRO—Damian Warner always wanted to win the Olympic decathlon his own way and, by saving his medal chances with his best javelin throw all year, he did. Ashton Eaton won his second Olympic decathlon, retaining the unofficial title of being the world’s greatest athlete. The American set a new Olympic record with his 8,893 points total, to go with the world record he already holds. France’s Kevin Mayer, in a breakout performance and national record, won silver, 59 points back and Warner held on for bronze.
