“Rap purists and people who love confrontation love to say there’s no rules to this shit,” Drake reflects. And Bodied explores the extent to which a rap battle ought to permit him to say them. It posits that it is the nature of the rap battle to not only encourage impropriety but to demand it of all participants. So, in a sense, Drake is right: there are protocols and conventions one should follow in a rap battle, should one like to exit the fray unsullied by the mess it whipped up. But the truth is also that some of the things Pusha T said come with a price: notably, being that guy for the rest of his career.
