Cameroon: hydropower plant to be built in country’s northern region


A UK independent energy company has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Cameroon government to develop a hydropower plant. The Bini a Warak Hydroelectric Project (the “Bini Project”) will be located in the northern Adamawa Region of Cameroon. The 75MW project is expected to provide “clean, stable and affordable power” to Cameroon’s northern region, said Savannah Energy PLC. Hydropower plant to help Cameroon address electricity shortages“Domestic hydropower potential is estimated to be 23,000MW, with 75% of this capacity concentrated in the Sanaga River basin located in the north of the country. “However only 3% of Cameroon’s hydropower potential has currently been exploited.”Previous forecasts estimated that hydropower would represent about 75% of the energy mix by 2023.
