The remarkable form of Britain’s top two men on Europe’s clay courts continued when Cam Norrie scored the best win of his career by toppling US Open champion Dominic Thiem. The left-hander, 25, reached the quarter-final of the Lyon Open when he dispatched the Austrian 6-3, 6-2 in just 65 minutes to register a first victory over a top-five player. Thiem, world No 4 and a former French Open finalist, was not at his best but is still a formidable scalp on a what is not supposed to be Norrie’s preferred surface. Norrie has already reached the final of the Estoril Open this month and defeating Thiem — one of the main contenders for the French Open — was his 21st victory of the season at main ATP Tour level. Norrie dispatched the Austrian 6-2, 6-3 to register his first victory over a top five opponent‘I’m moving well and I’ve played a lot of matches on this surface,’ Norrie said.
