One of the world’s leading universities is taking a significant step towards levelling the playing field by offering disadvantaged students a second chance. Cambridge University today announced that students from less affluent backgrounds who do better than expected in their public exams will be given another chance to win a place. But now Cambridge is to reconsider applications from students from disadvantaged backgrounds whose grades are better than expected. The alternative route for students who ‘overachieve’ is to take a gap year, but this option is often not feasible for students from low income backgrounds, according to Shadab Ahmed, access officer for Cambridge University Students’ Union. "This is a fantastic opportunity for students who exceed expectations and gives them a chance to gain a place at Cambridge," he said.
