PhotoTo the Editor:Re “Women Get ‘Chick Flicks.’ What About Men?,” by Gloria Steinem (Op-Ed, March 2):When my older daughter was 11, she attended a Y.M.C.A. camp for girls, directed by a man who thought that it was appropriate for his campers to view “Pretty Woman,” an R-rated film with a prostitute as the lead female character. I complained to his supervisor, a woman who shared my objection, and to my friends, many of whom dismissed my concerns and embraced the film as a lighthearted romantic comedy. Gloria Steinem reminds us that we must resist the normalization of films that portray women enjoying their own subordination. In study after study, psychologists have demonstrated that we internalize negative cultural stereotypes, even about our own identities.
