Yet when Article 51A was put into the Constitution, it was probably not envisaged that the country would be sliding into superstition and false belief with the encouragement of the ruling dispensation 70 years after Independence. Mr Vijayan referred to Article 51A when he called for a mass movement to protect science and fight against superstition at a time when "those in power" were promoting "pseudoscience". Mr Vijayan's concern reflects the alarm of the thousands who marched in different cities on August 9 last year in defence of science. Astrology and vaastu are being labelled sciences, and being set up as cure-alls for the less privileged and the superstitious. They are part of the larger vote-getting, Hindutva-consolidating project that needs, as its corollary, the death of the scientific spirit and logical thought.
