A professional association representing post-primary teachers of Irish has called for an “urgent review” of new Junior Cycle sample papers issued last week by the State Examinations Commission (SEC). An Gréasán do Mhúinteoirí Gaeilge (The Irish Teachers Network) is seeking a meeting with the SEC and the Department of Education to discuss recommendations it says will improve the newly reformed examination. Chairperson Shane Ó Coinn, said teachers have expressed concerns in the last week relating to the breadth of material pupils have to cover. “It’s not that Irish is any harder than other languages, the problem is that the exam is not suitable - especially for those learning Irish as a second language,” he said. It won’t help their confidence in speaking the language either,” Ó Coinn said.
