California sewers are blocked by desperate people using shredded T-shirts as toilet paper

Some residents in Northern California have resorted to cutting up T-shirts to replace toilet paper amid a growing shortage, causing sewer blockages. Waste Management officials in Redding - population 91,800 - this week issued a warning to the public, reminding local residents that flushing anything other than toilet paper down the drain could cause serious backups. If the city's sewage system gets clogged, if could send fecal matter back up into showers, toilets and sinks. On Wednesday, city officials in Redding said that someone apparently had used shredded T-shirts in place of toilet paper, which caused a blockage in one of Redding's sewer lines, reported Redding Searchlight. A work crew was dispatched to Russell Street where the backup was reported and removed T-shirts clogging the sewer line.
