California Votes -- The Winners And Losers

They’re still counting the votes in California (you can thank a lot of last-minute mail ballots for that), the scene of a statewide primary Tuesday night. In the meantime, let’s go through some winners and losers. The Democratic lieutenant governor received the most votes in last night’s “open” gubernatorial primary (all 27 candidates on the same ballot, with the top-two finishers advancing to the general election). And he’s promised a pupu platter of progressive goodies: universal pre-kindergarten, two free years of community college and a statewide single-payer healthcare system. The former Los Angeles mayor finished a distant third overall in the primary vote – a weak second among Democrats (Newsom received 33.3%; Villaraigosa just 13.5%).
