Nieto did not disclose the condition of the deputy but said that "the deputy is out of the woods right now." The incident began when the Sheriff's Office received "a call for service" at 7:49 a.m. One deputy arrived at the scene, Nieto said. Salinas Mayor Kimbley Craig said in a text message: "We are praying for our Monterey County Sheriff's Deputy. Chief Deputy Eddie Anderson of the Sheriff's Office said he was unable to verify the number of shots.
