Calgary's Cale Makar captures NCAA's Hobey Baker Award

Cale Makar made history on Friday night, becoming the first player in UMass Minuteman history to win the Hobey Baker Award. It’s the latest scrapbook entry for the 20-year-old Calgarian, who collected the hardware in Buffalo which is the site of the 2019 Frozen Four NCAA championship. On Saturday, Makar will help try to lead the Minutemen to an NCAA title when UMass takes on the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in the championship game. “Hopefully I’ll be joining the Avalanche,” the former Alberta Junior Hockey League star told the Hockey News after accepting the award Friday night. The former Brooks Bandits talent is the first Calgarian to capture the award since North Dakota Fighting Hawks forward Ryan Duncan did so in 2007.
