CALGARY—The union that represents Calgary police officers is challenging the Calgary Police Service policy that bans officers from consuming cannabis, even off the job. Calgary Police Association president Les Kaminski said the union filed a policy grievance Wednesday, as soon as the rule came into effect when cannabis became legal across Canada. Just one day after cannabis was legalized in Canada, Calgary Police Association president Les Kaminski said the union is contesting the Calgary Police Service’s HR policy on cannabis use. Darren Leggatt, the leader of the Calgary Police Service cannabis legalization project, said in September that because the service doesn’t have enough information about how long cannabis impairment can last, they landed on a blanket ban. Policing is considered “safety-sensitive” work, and Leggatt said that uncertainty about public safety if officers use cannabis on off-duty time drove the CPS policy.
