Calgary police check stops ‘business as usual’ after cannabis legalization

CALGARY—It’s now legal for Canadians to consume recreational cannabis, but while police expect they may see an uptick in calls for suspected drug-impaired drivers, it’s otherwise “business as usual.” Calgary police Const. Dan Kurz said that for officers running check stops, not much has changed for the time being. Regular check stops will still run four nights a week, and officers will be using the same techniques they already use to identify drug-impaired drivers. Dan Kurz said screening for drug-impaired driving at check stops is something CPS already does. Kurz is one of about 30 Calgary officers trained as drug recognition experts.
