One of the band's most famous covers is their version of Tom Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance," which they performed at the MusiCares tribute to Tom Petty in 2017. At that event the band got to meet Petty backstage, where Shultz spoke to one of the great American songwriters. Shultz shared with me that encounter and in his words, here is what he learned. But Tom Petty, looking at his body of work, I was like, 'Man, Tom wrote so many songs and they're so deep and at the same time there were so many catchy songs and songs that were just so readily available.' I leaned in and I said, 'Tom, I feel like we would have been friends in high school.'
