The cable operators represented by the Federation of International Cable TV and Telecommunications Association of the Philippines (Fictap) expressed alarm over “illegal and unfair competition” that could result from this deal. Meanwhile, many of the cable operators are permitted to offer internet connectivity to their customers under a value-added services (VAS) license. The cable operators who offer internet as a value-added service can only offer it to their cable TV subscribers. Most cable operators, however, already have that know-how, which makes partnerships between local cable operators and local electric distributors a natural fit. There is a good business opportunity that lies in it even for the cable TV operators and they should seize it.
