more-inThe state general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), G. Ramakrishnan, has moved a Public Interest Litigation petition seeking direction to the State government to establish Lokayukta as per the provisions of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, within a time-frame to be fixed by the Madras High Court. According to the petitioner, the Act was passed by Parliament in 2013 paving way for the establishment of Lokayukta to check corruption in public offices. The Act mandates that every State shall establish the Lokayukta within one year from the date of commencement of the Act. While 20 States in the country have constituted the Lokayukta thus far, the Tamil Nadu government has failed to comply with the statutory obligation, the petitioner said. The PIL which was filed on Friday is likely to be heard by the First Bench of the High Court headed by the Chief Justice Indira Banerjee on Monday.
