COVID-19 cases have dropped 70 per cent since peak of the third wave, Tam says

The number of new COVID-19 cases being reported daily has dropped 70 per cent since the mid-April peak of the third wave, Canada's chief public health officer said today. The average number of patients with COVID-19 being treated in hospital each day has dropped by 40 per cent since the April peak, Tam said. Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Howard Njoo looks on as Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam responds to a question during a news conference on Friday, September 11, 2020 in Ottawa. (Adrian Wyld/The Canadian Press)An average of 2,600 people are now in hospital with COVID-19, Tam said; 1,100 of those people in ICUs, a 25 per cent decline from the April peak. Njoo said the "epidemiology has evolved" and COVID-19 cases driven by variants of concerns may also lead to more severe outcomes requiring longer hospital stays.
