MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines posted its highest single-day fatality count on Sunday at 50, as the death toll from the novel coronavirus disease nears 300. Based on the latest data of the Department of Health (DOH), 297 people infected with COVID-19 in the country have now succumbed to the highly contagious respiratory illness. This tally likewise appeared to be the highest single-day record of people who have managed to recover from COVID-19, a disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. The novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2 was first detected in late 2019 in China’s transport hub – Wuhan City, Hubei province. As of April 12, the virus already infected more than 1,783,720 people and killed more than 108,900 worldwide.
