CFL players in four position groups were required to wear a soft-shell helmet cover, called the Guardian Cap, during training camp and padded practices. Fans will not see the caps worn during games, but practice fields will be filled with players wearing the caps, making their heads look larger. Players said they need to get used to the caps; however, they understand the necessity of the added head protection. Offensive and defensive linemen, linebackers, and running backs are required to wear the caps, while other players can choose to wear them. The CFL made the caps mandatory for four positional player groups and are optional for others.
