“I am better known as Madurai,” says Gopi, chosen for the Commonwealth Queen’s Young Leader award. He has challenged the conventional understanding of gender. He notes that even among gender minorities, there are more than 58 identities. He says transgender is more a generic adjective and does not include genderqueer persons, a reason that propelled him to educate people on the many shades of gender. The State Council of Educational Research and Training has called him to conduct a session.
