Burkina Faso's military government has announced it will extend junta rule for another five years. But Burkina Faso has now joined neighbouring Mali in extending military rule. Burkina Faso has been governed by the army since January 2022, when Lt Col Paul-Henri Damiba seized power from President Roch Kaboré. In September 2022, Capt Traoré ousted Col Damiba, arguing a second coup was necessary because Col Damiba was himself unable to tackle the insurgency. Capt Traoré promised to improve the country's dire security situation within "two to three months" and restore civilian rule within 21 months.
