Burevi cyclone: Measures to minimise damage

The Government directed the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures to minimise the damage from the cyclonic storm “Burevi” which was set to make landfall in Sri Lanka last night (2). The Department of Meteorology warned that the cyclone was expected to blow across the Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. last night. In addition, all Assistant Directors of the Northern and Eastern Provinces were instructed to co-ordinate with the officers in charge of all divisions and the fishing communities in this regard. The Government urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent the destruction of a large number of vessels owing to this natural disaster. Moreover, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Director General S. Ranasinghe yesterday advised the people in high-risk areas of the Burevi cyclone to not leave their houses or safe places.
