Mendez, who had already been jailed for heroin smuggling in France, came to New Zealand after "holidaying" through Africa for 12 days. New documents released to the Herald show Mendez bought five puffer jackets at a "flea market-type store" in Zimbabwe. One of the puffer jackets that had cocaine concealed in the lining.
