GUWAHATI: The AK-47 rifle bullet has been found to be the highest smuggled item by the region's illegal gunrunners who continue to exploit railways to smuggle them. Militants and gunrunners across the border in Myanmar smuggle them through Nagaland and Assam to reach other parts of the country. Payments were made through hawala networks.A high rate of smuggling of 9 mm pistol bullets was also recorded. "Out of the total seizures, there were 391 rounds of 9mm pistols followed by 126 rounds of 7.62 pistols and 120 rounds of 7.65 pistols," the official said. The seizure included 99 rounds of .22 bore guns, 78 rounds of .32mm pistol, 60 rounds of .303 BDR rifle, 42 rounds of Insas rifle, 28 rounds of .38 mm pistol and 10 rounds of 315 sparking rifle.
