Building confidence climbs to its highest level since 2018, given low base effectsThe FNB/BER Building Confidence Index has climbed 12 points to 39 for the second quarter of 2021. Gains in confidence has mainly been driven by building material manufacturers and hardware retailers. "In contrast, the confidence of what can be considered the mainstream building sector is still very depressed," said Siphamandla Mkhwanazi, Property economist at FNB. Excluding building material manufacturers and hardware retailers, confidence levels would be around a low of 25 points. "As things stand, we are set to see the building sector once again far underperform the rest of the economy this year," he added.
