The Central Bank of Ireland may have been more than a little surprised by the latest submission from Brokers Ireland on the thorny subject of commissions. Last November the Central Bank announced that instead of banning commissions on investment products it was instead proposing to bring in a relatively modest suite of restrictions. Countries such as the UK, the Netherlands and Australia have opted for an outright ban and so it appeared Irish brokers had won out in their bid to retain the status quo, allowing them to be paid by the financial companies whose products they recommend rather than by their own customers.
