The stereotypical Briton is understated, possessed of the “stiff upper lip”. But should the fact that we are not a nation of self-assured extroverts also be reflected in the way we are governed? It seems to me that national modesty has seeped into the way our government thinks. The UK has always had incredible actors — think of Sean Connery and Emma Thompson. Recently we’ve seen unprecedented levels of investment in the industry, extending well beyond acting talent to direction, production and technical craft.
