In a suite on the 27th floor of the Venetian hotel in Las Vegas, British microchip designer Imagination laid out its bet on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). As part of CES, the global technology show held last week, chief executive Ron Black demonstrated how AI products using Imagination’s intellectual property in areas such as facial recognition would usher in a new dawn for the business. Black’s vision for the future was, however, overshadowed by a far bigger issue. Days earlier, Imagination had revealed it had rekindled its relationship with Apple, the tech behemoth that has the power to make or break businesses in its supply chain. Cosying up to Apple is a big gamble — and the two companies have a rocky history.
