The US withdrew its B61 nuclear weapons from there in 2008. At the time, such bombs were seen as obsolete and hopes were higher for a further disarmament of nuclear weapons. Against the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its president’s threats to use nuclear weapons against NATO, nuclear weapon modernisations programmes are taking place.
