Brisk walking 5 times a week may combat brain aging, study suggests

A brisk walk around the block several times a week could do wonders to preserve a healthier mind - as well as body - as you age, a new study suggests. Younger adults who exercise - especially doing aerobic workouts - tend to have greater brain volumes and show less atrophy as they age. They were to be compared to the other half of the participants who were instructed to start doing aerobic exercise that got their heart rates up. Everyone's recall and cognition improved, compared to the start of the study, even if they were doing less aerobic exercise. The results suggest that short, but consistent and frequent aerobic exercise may help fight the effects of brain-aging, in turn reducing dementia risks.
