Bringing Toronto together means breaking down the systems that segregate its neighbourhoods


Before COVID upended our lives, one of the best parts of my day was people-watching on the subway. From bankers to buskers, from the newly arrived to those who still remember the subway being built; a 30-minute ride would present the diversity of Toronto in its purest form. The sad truth is, though, for most of us subway riders, the rest of our day would rarely be as diverse. As University of Toronto’s Prof. David Hulchanski has outlined, Toronto’s neighbourhoods have undergone a disturbing alignment of class and racial segregation. Even as our city is becoming more diverse, its neighbourhoods are becoming more segregated.
