Bring back draft to solve army's extremism problem, demands Merkel ally

Photo: DPAA politician from Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) has proposed a radical solution to the scandal surrounding an alleged far-right terror cell in the army - bringing back the draft. “If we brought back the draft, citizens in uniform would act as an early warning system for spotting extremism from the far right and far left,” Patrick Sensburg told the Funke Mediengruppe on Wednesday. He added that since the draft was abolished six years ago, the Bundeswehr (German army) no longer represented a cross section of German society. “Out civilian population is our immune system against the enemies of democracy,” he said. Germany's Bundeswehr - including the army, navy and air force - has a troop strength of about 180,000 active military personnel, the second largest in the EU after France.
