Brightburn (R16, 90mins) Directed by David Yarovesky ★★★Thirteen years ago, James Gunn made an impressive directorial debut about the chaos caused by the arrival of meteorite in a small town. But instead of Wheelsey, South Carolina, the action here takes place in Brightburn, Kansas. In Brightburn, there's far too much reliance on jump scares, an overly strident score and an uncanny sense of deja vu. Very different in tone to Slither, director David Yarovesky's (2014's The Hive) tale trades in terror rather than humour. While certainly not a bad movie, I was left feeling disappointed that Brightburn has simply turned out to be a dullish entry in the demonic child genre.
