Sri Lanka’s tennis team finished in the third spot after beating Qatar in the play-off for the first fourth places at the Davis Cup Group III PNB Paribas tie that was played at the OCBC arena in Singapore yesterday. With this narrow win over Qatar, thanks to the inclusion of leading player Harshana Godamanna, Sri Lanka now have the opportunity of being promoted again to group II. This will depend on the new grading system to be implemented by the ITF. In the process, though losing to Vietnam 0-3 in the first confrontation, Sri Lanka managed to beat Singapore 2-1 and Kuwait 2-1 in the two pool A fixtures. It was possible due to the experience and crafty play of Godamanna who was the only player to win his Singles matches as well as in the Doubles partnered by Dineshkanthan Thangaraja.
