Beatrice Marura, a single mother of four with an autistic child, Emanuel Mmasa, 12, says the life of autistic children revolves around a mother who understands the pain of her child. Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how a person interacts and communicates with others. When Mmasa was seven years old, his mother joined a group of parents with special children, where she learnt that her son was suffering from autism. She took him to Nairobi for assessment as advised by her friend, and she was told Phinley was autistic. “As a mother, when you have a special child, he has a special place in your heart, and you break your back for that child and even forget you have other children,” Omboga said.
