To help kick off its new season, Jazz at Lincoln Center this weekend will offer performances and a live webcast by soulful vocalist Brianna Thomas of Ella Fitzgerald’s blues music. Thomas will expand upon a concert she gave last September at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, where she celebrated Fitzgerald’s centennial by performing the ten blues songs—including “St. Louis Blues” and “Hear Me Talkin’ to Ya”—on Fitzgerald’s 1963 album, These Are The Blues. But Ella still sang the blues. Then you can’t rely on the loveliness of your voice to tell somebody the truth, which is what the blues is based on.
