The Suez Crisis, Blair’s poodle-like traipsing after Bush into Iraq, and Prince Andrew whenever he steps off a plane. But surely none compares with the excruciating spectacle that unfolded this week with the auditions to be the next leader of the world’s fifth biggest economy. Auditionees who resembled the tragic collection of untalented, attention-seeking freaks you see on the opening week of Britain’s Got Talent. I genuinely don’t know how 10 of them had the gall to stand before us and big themselves up as the next Prime Minister. Boris Johnson, shameless as ever, hid from scrutiny, bribed high-earning Tory members with tax cuts and lied about everything else.
