Sterling slipped by nearly 1 per cent against the dollar in early trading before gaining slightly to $1.3117 in the afternoon after the prime minister met with European business leaders in Downing Street. Representatives from France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic and Belgium attended the talks. They told her that progress in the talks were needed urgently or UK jobs and investment could be lost. Mrs May acknowledged that the next two week were “extremely important”.
